Welcome everyone to Sanctuary. Today we are continuing our deep dive into the letter to the Ephesians. If you have your Bibles, go ahead and turn to chapter 2.

14:02

This is where Paul gives us the ultimate blueprint of grace. 'For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.' Notice the sequence here. The grace precedes the faith.

15:45

It's not a transaction; it's a transformation. We often treat our spiritual lives like an economy, trying to earn our standing. But Paul shatters that paradigm entirely in verses 8 and 9.

18:20

And then verse 10, 'For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works.' The works don't save us, they are the result of us being saved. We are his masterpiece.

Study Notes

Key Scripture: Ephesians 2:8-10

"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."

Theological Insight

The Greek word for "handiwork" is poiema, from which we get the English word "poem". Paul is suggesting that our lives, redeemed by grace, become God's artistic masterpiece.

Reflection Questions
  • Where in your life are you still trying to "earn" God's favor instead of accepting His grace?
  • How does viewing yourself as God's "masterpiece" change your self-perception?
